You are invited to attend the McIntyre Hall sculpture unveiling ceremony and reception on Wednesday, April 16 at 5PM. A reception will follow the ceremony.
A generous Anonymous Donor commissioned and donated a sculpture entitled "Performers" to the Skagit Regional Public Facilities District and Skagit Valley College in recognition of McIntyre Hall's 10th Anniversary Season. The steel sculpture was created by Burlington artist Roger Small. The piece is approximately 9 feet tall and will be placed near the main entrance to McIntyre Hall. Executive Director Nida Tautvydas is "so very thankful for the vision and generosity of the donor and thrilled to have a piece of art gracing the exterior of the Hall."
Roger Small studied under Sydney Eton and Orville Chatt and received his AA from Skagit Valley College in 1973. Having worked as a union ironworker for 35 years, creating iron sculptures is an extension of his work experience. He is also known for his painting and currently shows his work at J's Gallery on Gilkey Square in La Conner and at the Bluewater Gallery in Poulsbo. The donor chose Small because of the work he has done with the Museum of Northwest Art, his connection to Skagit Valley College, and quite simply because he was the perfect artist to do this piece.
A note from the artist: "In June of 2013 I was approached by an anonymous donor about building a large metal sculpture for the entry area of McIntyre Hall. Multiple images reflecting the performing arts were requested. The base of the sculpture rising to the middle of each image is my interpretation of the Northwest. Each image above depicts one of the performing arts. There is a Conductor in the middle, the actor/singer to the left, and the dancer to the right. I wanted to show in each image: joy, passion, and dedication to the arts. I am very honored to have the privilege to build this sculpture for McIntyre Hall, and hope you will enjoy it for many years to come." ~ Roger Small.
